Exmouth, Rolle College to be Closed ! 2008

Report from Friday, 11 November 2005

Governors at the University of Plymouth have decided to close the Exmouth teacher training campus, known as Rolle College.

Now in late 2006, Discussions are under way over the sale of Exmouth's Rolle campus site, to be vacated by the University of Plymouth in 2008 after the sell off to raise money for Plymouth.

Negotiations are ongoing over the future of the nine-acre faculty of education.

Also up for sale are three acres of playing fields off Douglas Avenue and several halls of residence.

Meetings are going on between the university, which will relocate its education facilities to Plymouth, and interested parties. It is possible that Exmouth Community College and Exeter College are two of the parties involved, but this is not confirmed.

Also we shall see if it goes to the highest bidder in the long run, it must be worth a lot more than the £6 million it would sell for as an education centre, you dont have to be a proffessor to work out how much you would get for the land if used for hundreds of properties?

Sadly the Governors at the University of Plymouth have voted to close the Exmouth teacher training campus.

The faculty of education, also known as Rolle College, will now be transferred to Plymouth. The 4,000 students and 300 staff have the chance to will move to the city in 2008, if they can afford it or can with commitments, family money etc.

About 300 students and some staff walked out of the meeting as the announcement was made on Friday afternoon (11 November 2005).

Amid tearful scenes, angry opponents of the move accused the university of betraying them for money.
Senior lecturer Ulrika Gelder said: "They are playing with people's lives. Hundreds of staff will lose their jobs. I can't see how they can justify this."

The university says consolidating activity at its Plymouth base strengthens its work. It is claimed moving the campus, known as Rolle College, will cost the local economy £20m.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Roland Lewinsky, said: "In my view, this is a necessary development to help us achieve the mission of becoming an international centre of learning and research excellence serving the whole of the South West peninsula.

"We now have several years of hard work ahead to manage the relocation with the minimum disruption for our staff and students."

The closure of Exmouth campus has little to do with student experience and more to do with the alleged £6 million that would be freed up by the sale of the campus.

In Sept 2005, The new academic year started on Monday, with many first-year students shocked to discover their fourth and final year’s study would be in Plymouth.

Bad news for students & the town.
Rolle College,
Primarily a teacher training college, it has a fantastic academic reputation and has an excellent relationship with the local community and Schools. Despite this, Plymouth Vice Chancellor Roland Levinsky has “relocated” Rolle College to a new site, miles away in Plymouth.

Rolle plays an integral part in the life of Exmouth as a town, and it is a campus with many mature students with family commitments. For them, Levinsky’s proposals are not for a “relocation” at all; they’re for a closure.
