Establishment of
Exmouth Town Management Partnership
Report by Simone Fowler. 31 May 2001

First Forum Meeting
The first meeting held on the 26th March provided an introduction to Town Management with examples of what had been achieved by these partnerships in other towns throughout the country and how it fits within the wider context of the County and SW region. A presentation was given by the School of Business & Economics at Exeter University on the main findings from the recently published report a "Social and Economic Assessment of Exmouth". A representative from South West Tourism gave a talk on factors affecting the tourism industry and coastal towns in the South West. The County Council, Town Council and County Council gave a demonstration of their commitment to Town Management before attendees discussed what they wanted to achieve in the town.

Second Forum Meeting
At the second meeting held on 24th April 2001 those attending discussed and formulated within groups how they saw a vision for Exmouth and its town centre in 5 years time and ways in which they would like to see it improved to regenerate the local economy. A structure for a partnership between businesses and local organisations was established and focused on three main components:

An Annual/Biannual Forum

4 Monthly Action Groups (consisting of volunteers from the forum)

Monthly Partnership Board (consisting of core funders and a police representative)

4 main areas of work for regenerating the town's economy were agreed:

1) Town Regeneration & Commercial Development
ncluding crime reduction & safety issues)

2) Town Marketing and Promotion

3) Accessibility & Transportation

4) Environmental & Historic Quality

Third Forum Meeting

At this meeting an overarching vision and strategic objectives for regenerating the town's economy were agreed as set out at the end of this report.

The proposal to establish a Tourism Focus Group to develop a vision and strategy for promoting Exmouth as a visitor destination with the district council was also supported.

A more detailed structure for the partnership including the action groups and partnership board was agreed by the forum members. The forum agreed that an annual membership fee of £50 should be sought from all those wishing to join the forum and direct approaches should be made to multi-national names and individual businesses in the town for financial support for town management.
