"Boat House" shelly beach,
happy memories of our time there |
As
a child in the 1970's my family holiday was always
spent in Exmouth. The "Boat House"?
was owned by a family friend called Ken Morgan
and I have very happy memories of our time there.
I am now looking for information on that house, if
it still exists, as I would love to take my family
there now. I live in Detroit USA. I remember that
the house was right on the beach (shelly beach) with
stone steps leading down and seemed almost opposite
to the Lifeboat. It was right next to a slip way (you
could hear the boats being rolled down early in the
morning). It had a weather vane on top and was larger
than most of the surrounding boat houses. Not much
info I know but I can see it clearly in my mind! If
anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Thanks. Julia and Monty Najar juliaandmonty@najarmail.com

SAVE THE DEVON AND DORSETS
CAMPAIGN |
Hi,
I used to work at the Guide Dog for the Blind centre
at Exwick in Exeter and was in the Exeter Special
Constabulary so I have an interest in the area .
I hear that the DEVON AND DORSET REGIMENT is one of
the INFANTRY REGIMENTS thats to be merged by Geoff
Hoon and his Ministry of Defence General Jackson and
wonder if there is a SAVE THE DEVON AND DORSETS CAMPAIGN
team as I saw a mention on Hansard from the MP for
the area trying his hardest to save the regiment.
There is a Save the Scottish Regiments campaign ongoing
and Save the Black Watch campaign too and they had
a glorious rally in Edinburgh last December with 6
pipebands and over 3000 marchers. On 9 April
2005 there is a SAVE THE REGIMENTS CAMPAIGN
RALLY IN LONDON web site www.londonrally.info/main/
incase anyone is interested in attending this important
and historical rally
Kind Regards to all the campaigning Regiments

Maybe someone out there might tell others to expand
the Save the Devon & Dorsets campaign . You might
like to add the SAVE

Hello
I'm searching for any information on my Grand father,
Philip Ernest Willeard, who was buried by the War
Graves Commission in the Churchyard of SS Margaret
and Andrew, Littleham having died on 21 November 1918.
He was a Private in the Army Service Corps having
previously been a chauffeur. His recorded address
at the time was 4 Louisa Cottages - I assume in Exmouth
itself. His wife, Lily Elvina, who came from Norfolk
moved back to Sheringham very soon after he was buried.
Does Louisa Cottages still exist and whereabouts in
Exmouth are they to be found? Any help would be appreciated.
I am happy for you to release my e-mail address for
possible replies. Many thanks Regards Phil.

& English cousins: evacuate to
Budleigh in www2, and my great uncle George
Carter's home, Pinehollow |
Hello
Greg: Just by chance, I found the Exmouth website,
really enjoyed the 360 views. I am the daughter of
a RAF navigator who came to Canada to train during
ww2. When he was shot down, my mother and I [aged
15 months] sailed to England for four years, It was
near the end of the war, but my mom and I still had
to evacuate to Budleigh, and my great uncle George
Carter's home, Pinehollow. I was able to
visit my cousins in the Exmouth area a few years ago.
Really enjoyed the great weather, [it was late summer]
the beautiful countryside, and, of course the scones,
clotted cream and strawberry jam. This site will keep
me in touch with my English cousins. I would welcome
any information on the H. S. Carter family. I have
quite a bit on my direct line, but not the whole family.
I do have a distant relative in Bristol, who is also
into searching for his roots, who might see this and
get in touch. Thanks, Frances
hi,
just hoping i might find a couple of people. from
the end of 2000 until the middle of 2002 i dated a
lady who lived in exmouth and i enjoyed visiting the
town at the same time. it is a lovely little town.
during this time we used to visit the strand coffee
house i think it was called. run by andrea and could
be brett ( but i cannot remember his name definatly).
does anyone know of their whereabouts?.
the
other person i am looking for is the guy originally
from bristol who ran the bakers shop on albion hill
and supplied some local shops including the mini market
along exeter road until late 2001 early 2002 when
he retired and closed down and i believe the shop
is now an estate agent. if anyone knows of any information
on these people, i would appreciate an email. thank
you, trevor.

Greg, I came across your site when I was looking up

Australia and moved here from Exmouth when I was 13.
My family still live in Exmouth today (the Greenaways,
Knowles). I am trying at the moment to convince my
husband to move back to Exmouth so that my kids can
experience the wonderful childhood I had growing up.
I would love for them to go to Brixington Junior School
just like I did and then onto Exmouth Comm Coll. I
would love for them to be around our tight knit family
there and grow up in an environment by the sea where
it's safe.
Anyway I wanted to say what a wonderful site you have

Well Done. Vicki

Dear
Greg, I am hoping that in writing to you I might be

Horace Flowers of Exmouth. The passing of
my grandmother, Claire Fitzgerald, this past week
left me in the care of many photos and letters belonging
to my late grandfather, James Henry Fitzgerald, who
spent four years as part of the 273rd Ordinance company
for the American Army during WWII.
Included was one half of a correspondence. I can only
gather that my grandfather was temporarily housed
in Exmouth at a place called Faraway on Seymour Road
with a F. Horace and Doris Flower. I would love to
find out if any relations to these people still remain
in or around Exmouth and find out if they are in possesion
of letters from James or Claire. The importance of
these letters is timeless and I am hoping to share
this history with the
relatives of the people who wrote them. Of course
if you are interested
in copies for your own historical files I would send
them on to you.

Your site is as good as ever. Recently I e-mailed

Regards, Sarah-Jane
First
can I start by saying that on reading your Web site
and viewing other peoples comments I must whole heartily
agree with what they say about your site! My reason
for writing is as follows: My
name is Nigel Skyner better know in the C.B. world
has 'Bakerboy' which was in the early 1980's. Exmouth
then was 'buzzing' with people communicating with
100's of other C.B.-ers all across the county and
the country, even aboard, the frequency we used
was 27 MHz (AM), myself and two other C.B-ers ie..The
Saint and Marine man were the three people to form
a club by the name or 'The River Exe Breakers'(Reb's
for short), we had at one time or another over 200
members and I have still obtained the best part of
those lists of 'handles' my request is (if you can
help me) to have a reunion of members and non- members
of the club, I need to compile a list first of people
wishing to be apart of this idea so I can make arrangements
regarding dates and a venue so if they would like
to e-mail me at : anything@skyner.screaming.net
I then can make a start, so if anyone is interested
or knows of someone that used to 'transmit' back then
please contact me.
Thankyou for your time Yours Faithfully, Nigel Skyner.
Love
your site.
My family used to live in Exmouth during 19th century.
I believe John Pine was publican at the Blue Anchor
(c1820s) and then lived at the Passage House on the
Point and worked with his sons as the official ferryman
across the Exe. A grandson, another John Pine worked
as a shipwright at the Redway shipyards on the Point.
All this before the present dock constructed.
Do you have any idea where the old pub was on Tower
Street. I guess it was a different place to the Pilot
Inn you have marked on the website map but i'm not
sure...
Any local info about any of the above appreciated.
I did like the engraving of boats landing at the Warren
c1840.

I
would like to say how very good your exmouth guide
site is. It is very well designed and obviously has
a lot of care and attention put into it. I am looking
for a new job and have seen a couple in Exeter I might
apply for. Not knowing much about the Exeter area
( I live in Poole ) I have been visiting a few sites
to find out something about the area and house prices
in case I make any progress with these jobs. Your
guide provides an excellent insite into Exmouth and
I would certainly consider the town if a suitable
opportunity arose. I know what is like trying to work,
or in your case operate a business, and run another
unpaid site at the same time and your results with
exmouth-guide are well worth viewing. Thanks, S. L.
Exmouth
in the 1940's, from Helen in Austrailia
Dear Greg,
Many thanks for the webpages on Exmouth and district.
Jimmy Savelle's involvement is interesting....I still
have photos of when he participated in the Marine
Tattoo at Lympstone in 1980, when I had the opportunity
to bring my children to Exmouth. I thoroughly enjoyed
that day, and so did my young son at the time. On
that same trip, I met an old school friend, who had
become one of the researchers for his program, Jim'll
Fix It.
I was born and bred in Exmouth, leaving Exmouth at
19 and the country at 19, to come and live in Australia,
not 600 miles south of Exmouth's namesake in the west.
Two very different towns in many ways, but each has
awesome beauty in their surroundings.
I have been thrilled to see your photos of Exmouth,
UK, to see my old
stamping ground, not really all that much changed
since I last saw it, or really all that much since
my childhood (I am over 50), tho I know that the town
centre has changed a bit, with the market, and the
mall situation through Chapel Street area.
I was last in Exmouth in 1986, which seems like forever
now. It was then January/February, so a little cold,
but the sea front was always good for a bracing walk,
no matter the time of year.
My
grandmother had a house in Mamhead View, just around
the corner from some of the photos, from about 1945
to approx 1984, when she died, and my parents lived
in Drakes Avenue, up between Littleham and Witheycombe,
after moving in from Woodbury Salterton, when I was
12. I no longer have any family there, since both
my parents have now passed on. My father was a real
estate agent in Exmouth for over 35 years.
However, enough of the potted personal history, I
just wanted to thank you for your work on the Exmouth
web, excellent stuff. I had the privilege of putting
the Holy Family Convent on an Old School Friends site,
and have been thrilled to get some contact from some
of my old school friends, since over 30 people have
added their names to the site under the school name.
I
dont have a web-page of my own, maybe I should. The
town(city actually) I live in is quite similar to
Exmouth, in many ways, tourist, covers about the same
area, but nowhere near the population at this stage,
being only about 25,000.
I
am also very pleased to see the Nature Reserve, after
all these years, I am glad something has been done
there, the collection of birds used to fascinate me
in the train to Exeter when I went to school daily
some years before attending the convent. I have two
beautiful old prints, one from Louisa Terrace, over
the Beacon, looking toward the Docks, and the other
looking toward the town, from the Estuary. Both dated
back in the 1800's I would think.
However, a rather long missive to say thank you, so
I will bore you no more. Thanks again Helen Counihan

almost 60 years ago. Clapp's Cafe was gone, and Challenger's
Pharmacy, and impressed me most was that Exmouth had
changed very little overall. I could still find my
way around very easily. The climate was as glorious
as ever, and it was still possible to sit atop the
sand dunes and look out to sea, one of my favourite
places in the whole world! Thank you for keeping Exmouth
beautiful and unspoiled. I'm due to retire in 5 years
and am giving serious thought to returning to Exmouth
to do so. Sincerely, Simon Farrow, Kamloops, BC, Canada.

Glenorchy
Church cottage.
What a super site. I now live in Northamptonshire
but was born in Exmouth in Glenorchy Church cottage
(on the Exeter road) many years ago. I attended Wythcombe
Raleigh Primary School and after we left I used to
return each summer for a holiday with my aunt. I had
many happy times in Exmouth. Congratulations to you
on putting together such a varied and interesting
site. I will be back to visit the site and now maybe
even the town.

Family
History: Elliot, 1881. Ellett & Matthews barometer.
Hello, I'm researching my family history and have
identified my Great-Grand Uncle George who was a shipping
agent, I believe out of Exmouth. Apparently there
was (is?) a customshouse on the quay with the Ellett
name on it. My Uncle has an Ellett & Matthews barometer
but so far I do not have its origin. My family lived
at Liverton Farm, Littleham, but George lived in Gertrude
Tce at the time of the 1881 census. Any relevant info
that you can forward would be very much appreciated,
and if you are interested I will forward info to you
as it's discovered. I live in New Zealand, my father
moved to Kent, got married, and they came here in
1952. I plan on a UK trip next year. Cheers, Geoff
Ellett
PS Thanks for old photos, it gives me a feel of George's
stomping ground.

writing book, needs info on the 50's & 60's
Dear Sirs, I´ve been for several times in Exmouth
to spend my summer holidays in your wonderful town.
So I thought you might be able to help me. I want
to write a book (novel) which plays in the 50´s and
60´s at Devon's Coast. I need some Information, and
experiences from people which spend their youth at
this time. Maybe someone would like to write to me
how it was to be 18 years old in those days. How was
life, about what did people talk, what where their
problems and their dreams?. I'm 31 years old and it
would make me very happy if someone would be interested
in my questions. I hope I didn´t disturb you. Please

Greg, Well done on a very interesting web site. I
am trying to find out more about Exmouth in the past,
especially photos and history around Trefusis Terrace,
as we now own a flat there. Do you have access to
old photos etc., or know where to trace the history
of our house? I have been to Exmouth library with
no luck. Are there any local historians or Societies
I can contact? Many Thanks Tares

able to find any relevant information on the internet.

Dear
Sir, I'm living in Dinan, France.
Exmouth and Dinan are "twin towns" and I wonder if
Exmouth has a club of radio-control modelers.
If so, would you please let me know if this club has
an e-mail address. Thanks very much. Silvain Pinot.

I
remember the water mill very well even when it was
working although that was very occasional. At the
time it was up for demolition there was a weak attempt
to preserve it I recall but it obviously came to nothing.
It lay neglected for years. I was at several schools
in and around Exmouth the first was a small private
one in big grounds and a gated entrance opposite the
newsagents in the centre of Withycombe.
I
am fifty four so that was probably 1949 and just after
I started there in kindergarten (it was mainly a girls
school) the old woman who owned it, soon announced
it was closing and I ended up at another small school
on the Salterton road near what was the hospital and
tennis club. I went from there to a school in Budleigh
which was bought by the same old lady from Withycombe
and renamed Copplestone House.
As
we lived on the edge of Woodbury Common travel was
difficult to all of them and I ended up boarding My
fathers business went bankrupt after his warehouse
of stock burnt down in a fire on Exmouth Docks and
I then went for three years to Exeter Road School
opposite the Library from there I went to the Grammar
School but unfortunately only for two years as my
fathers business fortunes having revived I was sent
off to board in Taunton.
The
best teaching I ever had was at the Grammar School
I particularly remember a Mr Amos who taught maths,
Andrews Latin and a Miss Tucker I thing with English. You
never know someone might remember me I still recall
lots of names and faces, sometimes better than people
met much more recently.
I
am not in the US at the moment but on my sail-boat
in Bonaire a small island in the Dutch Antilles just
North of the Venezuelan coast, we will be waiting
out the hurricane season here which starts 1st June.
We met a boat from Exmouth in St Lucia a couple of
years ago "Spirit of Exe" do you know of them?
