The
Avocet Line
Named after the bird that overwinters on the famous
Exe estuary, the Avocet Line is a busy busy railway
connecting Exeter Central and Exmouth stations.
Exmouth
is a beautiful family resort with its 2 mile long
seafront, lovely cliff
walks with stunning views of the bay. The
Dorset and East Devon Coast from Exmouth (eastwards)
has been officially ranked alongside the Great Barrier
Reef and the Grand Canyon as one of the natural wonders
of the world.

The
Exeter to Exmouth railway is very popular with local
people for commuting, shopping, education and leisure
trips. It has a ‘clockface’ service every half hour
for most of the day, with around 800,000 trips made
last year - and the number is growing.
This
is an important link for Exmouth and villages to Exeter,
please support it, it also saves trying to park in
Exmouth on a day trip, fantastic views of the Exe
Estuary, Great views at sunset.
In
the last few years through the ExeRail Partnership
of Local Authorities, and particularly Devon County
Council, Exeter City Council and East Devon Council,
there has been a substantial investment in improving
the stations on the route. Specifically:
New
vandal-resistant waiting shelters at Exmouth (part-funded
by Exmouth Town Council) and Topsham. Most of the
remaining shelters have been reglazed and repainted.
New station platform signs, litter bins and benches.
Painting of all railings and lamp columns.
Improved access at Topsham for the disabled.
Minor environmental works.
The
new station signs all include ‘The Avocet Line’ logo,
featuring the bird itself. The decision to name the
line is part of the programme to promote the 'Great
Scenic Railways of Devon & Cornwall', as operated
by Wessex Trains.
All
of the eight branchlines in the two counties are being
named to emphasise their individual character and
identity. The first of these - Exeter to Barnstaple
- was named 'The Tarka Line' a decade ago, and now
Exeter to Exmouth is being christened 'The
Avocet Line'.
The
name derives from the bird which overwinters on the
internationally-important Exe Estuary site. This initiative
is very much a joint venture with RSPB (whose logo
is the avocet), Exmouth Town Management Partnership,
and Exe Estuary Management Partnership. The naming
and links with the partners will ensure that the line
gets a higher profile nationally, introducing more
tourists to this very special area.
